Harvey Loves Harvey
Since 1992, artists Jason Dean (Brooklyn) and Matthew Nash (Boston) have collaborated under the name Harvey Loves Harvey. Calling themselves 'media concept artists,' they have created works in nearly all media, including painting, photography, video, film, sound, installation, interactive digital media, mail art, candy and bubble wrap. They have performed as musicians at CBGBs, lectured at colleges and universities, shown as gallery artists, installed public work, and much more: all chronicled live online at their website.
At the core of the Harvey Loves Harvey collaboration are three major themes: distance, failure and humor. These ideas have been combined in many ways, most often as 'pseudo-scientific¹ studies that explore the extremes of their theme. The Harveys have attempted to feel the same emotions for a whole day (1000 miles apart); attempted to live the same life for a week; and exploited the many failures of communication to extreme ends. They have invited their audience to participate with them in creating new conceptual works with Mad-Libs; re-enacted the comedy routine "Who's On First?" over several months via email; spent two years mailing a package from NY to Boston in an effort to 'prove¹ nothing; and been hit in the crotch with 26 domestic items to study the nature of humor. In 2002 they presented their first show of collected works, 'One Squared', at Oni Gallery in Boston. They have shown extensively in Boston, Italy, New York and Chicago. In the spring of 2005 they will present their piece "An Interactive Study of Human Response to Mediated Actions Without Consequence: Naughty Or Nice?" for the Boston CyberArts Festival. They are also putting the finishing touches on the first book of their collected works: "Pseudo-Science, Lies and Accidents on Purpose." A complete history of Harvey Loves Harvey, including live-online development of new work, can be found at www.harveylovesharvey.com
